Conservatory roofing FAQs

Is a conservatory roof replacement worth the cost?

Yes, absolutely! The main reason why a conservatory roof replacement is worth the cost is because it's so much more energy efficient than older ones. That means that you're saving money.

By replacing your tired, inefficient conservatory roof, you're reinventing your conservatory and giving it a new lease of life. You're adding another 20-25 years onto your conservatory’s lifespan by putting in a new replacement roof.

That’s also saving you money in the long run because you don't have to completely replace the structure when it finally needs ripping out and starting again.

In addition to saving you lots of money in heating bills over the next 10-15 years, replacing your conservatory roof – either with insulated panels, Ultra 380 tiled roofing, or even a stylish hup! new build conservatory – means that you’ll have an extra room in your house which is usable all year round.

FAQ 1 - worth the cost
How much does it cost to reroof a conservatory?

Costs for reroofing a conservatory can depend on a number of factors, including material chosen, size of your conservatory, and whether you need a new roof frame too.

The first is whether you opt for insulated panels, or a tiled roof.

For the average conservatory, we would say that if you're doing a conservatory roof insulated panel replacement, it might cost anything from £4,000 to £8,000 (depending on its size).

If you opted for the Ultra 380 tiled conservatory roof, it might cost between £9,000 and £13,000 for the average conservatory.

That might seem like a lot, but both costs would include the survey, materials, labour, quality assurance, building control (if needed) and VAT: everything fully and completely installed.

The cost would be more if your roof frame needs replacing – and similarly, if your conservatory is really big, it would cost on the upper end of that price range (or lower, if your conservatory is small!)

FAQ 2 how much does it cost
Can I get a grant for a new conservatory roof?

Many conservatory roofing companies still advertise the Government’s Green Homes Grants, which offered substantial subsidies to improve the energy efficiency of people’s homes. However, that scheme was stopped in 2021 so as far as we are aware, there are no active grants to help with conservatory roofing costs at the moment.

However there may still be grants available to people over 60, or people who are receiving benefits, to replace things like double glazing on their property – check the Government’s website for more details.

FAQ 3 can I get a grant
How do conservatory roof replacements improve home insulation?

Conservatory roof replacements massively improve a home’s insulation via the incredible insulation properties of the insulated panels that they are made of.

These panels are scientifically designed to be as energy efficient as possible. Essentially, they are made of uPVC – they’re weather resistant, temperature resistant, UV resistant and humidity resistant.

The benefit to you is that these panels massively improve your temperature control, and reduce your energy usage (saving you money on heating bills).

FAQ 5 how do they improve insulation
Are solid conservatory roofs more energy efficient in the UK climate?

Absolutely! Here in the UK, we spend half of each year in relatively chilly temperatures, with a few milder months, and then a month or two of hot weather (if we’re lucky!)

The insulated panels and Ultra 380 tiled roofs are super efficient when it comes to heat, making sure that your conservatory remains cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. That means you’ll spend a lot less on your energy bills, and a lot more time in your conservatory.

Many of us can remember a time when our conservatories were protected from the elements by a single sheet of corrugated plastic – which would result in everything inside practically melting during July, and then becoming damp and mouldy over the winter. Thankfully with solid conservatory roofs, those days are behind us!

Can I change my conservatory roof without planning permission?

Yes you can change your conservatory roof without planning permission. There's no planning permission needed with the conservatory roof replacement because a like for like replacement.

FAQ 7 can I change with planning
Do I need permission to put a solid roof on my conservatory?

If you’re replacing your conservatory roof with insulated panels, then you don’t need planning permission. That's because it's a like for like replacement.

However, if you’re opting for the Ultra 380 Tiled Roof, you wouldn’t need planning permission, but you would need what’s called Building Control. As part of the project, Star Roofs would handle that for you!

FAQ 9 what's the differences tiled and insulated
What's the difference between having a tiled conservatory roof compared to insulated panels?

The tiled conservatory roof and the insulated panels both do the same job of creating that living space for the whole year round which is cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter.

Tiled conservatory roofs are a higher standard of product because they're a superior product, and offer better insulation - this means that they are a little more expensive.

What are the problems with tiled conservatory roofs?

We know that people search for this online, and it’s an interesting question. Our answer is very simple: there are no problems with tiled conservatory roofs!

They're quick to install, they're energy efficient, they look amazing and last practically forever. So there are no problems with tiled conservatory roofs in our opinion.
